However, after learning this course, I can see that social media has many other uses. Especially, it will help with our studies and future career plan. However, the factual consensus is very important because we need to let people trust our PLN and trust the connections that we make.

  • Open dialogues about media literacy and factual information can create conflict, why does this happen?

Media literacy and factual information can create conflict because people may only think about their own opinions and ignore the factual information. It is hard to change people’s opinions when they already believe in them. However, it might be so different than factual information. Nowadays, social media gives us many news information. People get different information mostly online. There are might be understanding or incorrect information. People still only believe what they see online and forget to notice the actual information.

  • What is the benefit of having a PLN that values media literacy?

And get to know what the correct information is and get to know other people’s views. It also lets us have the ability to explain, evaluate the information. It teaches me how to verify the information and recognize other points of view.

  • Identify the risks and benefits of engaging with a public audience in a media space – what are the risks for a public figure or person in a position of trust (educator, lawyer, government official)?

There are many risks and benefits that when we are engaging with a public audience in a media space. As for me, social media help me learn more experience from others. And when I talk in the community, it allows me to hear more ideas from other people. When we are engaging with a public audience, we can care about the concerns, experiences, and opinions. We create a connection that makes us more open to receiving the information or ideas that we want to share with the public audience. With all the online formats, the public audiences would be engaged. When we share any posts online, an involvement gets the audience closer to the ideas. The online community helps us to get more opinions. However, privacy online would be a risk that we need to consider. Jody Vance said that “I have really benefited so much from the foundation of my network”. We can tell the benefits that the network brought us. However, there are also some risks. One of the risks might be that personal information can be found faster on the internet. As for the person in a position of trust (educator, lawyer, government official), it will be riskier because when those people engage with the public audience the information will be more confidential. We need to look at the consequences with the person in a position of trust on the public network.

  • How to best address negative replies and critiques reflective of your personal values and employer social media policy?

Social media is a public network that allows almost everyone can see the opinions or posts. We cannot stop there might be some negative replies and critiques that will affect our personal values. We still need to respect other people, we still need to be kind all the time with my response. And, we need to be thankful for the feedback. With the negative feedback, we need to focus on the mistakes that we might make, and it gives us an opportunity to learn how to express our ideas on public social media. We might also choose to ignore it. As for employer social media policy, we need to be more polite to respond to those negative replies and critiques because it might affect our work and influence our mood.

  • How do notable individuals use social media?

I think for notable individual people they also share their life on the social media as well. Notable induvial people will post things that they want to share with their followers. They also need to build trust with the followers. What they post might be more attractive compare to normal people. Because people do get a lot of helpful information from them. They can share photos or videos with their followers and get general networking with other people. Notable individuals might also provide some professional information to their followers. Basically , how they use the social media is same as how normal people use it . but they need to build more trust with their followers on the public network. Jody Vance uses social media to explore more connections with other people and it also will give her more opportunities.

  • What are the benefits of being in the public eye and having a PLN?

  • Building community with online tools provided by the employer can be limiting, what are the perceived restrictions and benefits?

When building a community with online tools provided by the employer is usually very limited. People cannot talk on the community that freely when it comes to with the work areas. However , there are still many benefits that helps with the working online community. When building a working community, I think it is easy for the employee to switch schedules and the requirements can be discussed more efficiently. It usually has some restrictions that the employee can post in the community. The management team usually will set up online settings and monitor some of the private conversations when it happens with the working community. However, when building the working community. People tend to have more connections with other people, it might be helpful for their future career development.

  • How do those, who are veteran storytellers, minimize the risk of sharing misinformation?

The veteran storytellers did not experience what happened so that their information might be at risk. People tend to tell the story a little bit differently from time to time. This is how it likely to be that a movie is talking about the true story that happened before. However, without the actual experience. The information might be different. One way that I can think of to minimize the risk in sharing misinformation is that when telling a story by asking the people who experienced it. It is very important. And expand the PLN with reliable resources can also lower the risk of sharing misinformation.

As Jessica Clark and Patricia Aufderheide (2013) talked about public broadcasting, newspapers, magazines, and network newscasts have played a central role in our life. Compare to how we used to get the information in the newspaper or magazines. Nowadays, people switch to the format of getting information online on social media. People can get a lot of information online and it is much more convenient. With the internet has been developed, we have changed our way of getting information and also using various social media online can let us also get connected with each other. “Digital public media will be an essential feature of truly democratic public life from here on in (Clark & Aufderheide,2013)” Social media engage in advocacy communication by using the online community chats to discuss the thoughts with each other. Social media can quickly develop many platforms in advocacy communications.

A hashtag is always used within a post on social media and it can help us if we are interested in a topic and is able to find the posts more quickly. It can also allow what we have written to be indexed by the social media network. Everyone can share their thoughts and opinions on the same topic and people can learn from each other. With the interview of Miller and Simpson, I have a better understanding of how PLN networks can help in our daily life with the online community. Markiel Simpson mentioned that he is using different social media online communities to join the group. It is all-natural for him to join the community. Twitter really helps him with his academic studies and develop his voice. Simpson also uses hashtags to drives other people’s interests. People are always getting different ideas from other people, using Twitter is really a good way to engage in advocacy communications. Major followers of Markiel Simpson are educators, and many people repost his ideas. We can see the impact of social media on communications. However, there are also some risks of social media. It is a public online platform. We need to be careful with the ideas that we post online. Most people will post positive ideas; however, we could not stop people from also post negative ideas that may influence them. This will challenge advocacy communication. Sharing language and tips on the way is always important in social media.

My PLN amplifies the views of others because I always look at other people’s opinions and it really influences my ideas. The most frequent social media that I use is Instagram, I always pay attention to who looked at my ins story and posts. I think better use of social media is to build more connections with others. Including the influencers and commentators. As for me, once I create my PLN, I always build it by adding valuable people. And I also choose a few interesting people from the social media that I choose and follow them. It is really helping because people I follow will also be of interest to me, and follow them to add them to my own PLN.

  • How would you create a PLN prior to engaging a social media campaign on a topic of your choice?

I would create a PLN prior to engaging in a social media campaign by posts my ideas and hearing other’s opinions. The social media that I use the most frequently is Twitter and Instagram. I always post my questions or ideas on social media to expand my PLN. “A PLN is simply an informal group of people who you learn things from on a regular basis ” (Woods, 2013). It is true that because I do get a lot of professional ideas from social media, this is also including academic thoughts. I could see that people recommend books that help our studies. And also exchange ideas on Twitter. #EconTwitter on Twitter gives me many ideas on how to improve my economic studies. “There is no better tool for building your PLN right now than Twitter” (Woods, 2013). According to Woods, when we follow favourite industry experts we can get ideas for other voices to follow. This is my favourite way of creating a PLN prior to engaging a social media.

  • What digital platforms are students currently using to develop their professional network?

They are many digital platforms that student using to develop their professional network. For example Facebook, Instagram is very popular for students to expand their personal learning networks. Students can get professional information and news. Another digital platform that students might use is LinkedIn, students can also use Facebook to sign up for an account for LinkedIn. What I can see here, all the information online is connected. I don’t use LinkedIn as I don’t have a lot of work experience yet. But I do use Instagram to develop my professional network. We can also set up a business account for the Instagram account. As for me, I set up another Instagram account for my dog and share pictures with others. However, I do see other people set up their pets’ accounts as a business account. Because they take professional pets pictures. When other people see it, they might need professional pictures for their pets as well. In this case, we can see how the business account working on Instagram.

This is a connection between our school life to our work in the future. As for a student right now, we are all taking online courses. We can see the importance of using digital platforms right now. Another thing that I consider to expand my professional learning network is to join an online community. I believe our class chat on Mattermost can be considered as an online community. We all share information and thoughts on there. It provides professional development resources, and it is a great place to start networking.

  • What is a digital identity?

Digital identity can be defined as everything you want to post online and share with others. Use the digital tools for your own benefit and also benefit other people (Stoller, 2016). It arises organically from the use of our personal information on the internet and is created by an individual’s action. It is what makes other people different than you. “Everything you do on the web that presents your identity(Stoller, 2016)” Digital identity is your footprint on the web, the things can be searchable and it is with you. It is the body of information about people or organization device that is online. It might also be used for your success in a career that your employer is looking for the type of people that they need.

  • How do personal versus professional approaches to digital identity affect social media use?

Social media let people become more invisible as professional work or share personal information. I also noticed that many social media have developed personal account and professional account which is use for business. However, social media are all connected, we can still find people’s personal account from their professional account. “Professional identity is the professional self- idea of an individual grounded in attributes, beliefs, motives, values and experience (Jawed et al. 33)” When people the social media on personal accounts or post personal ideas or pictures. People tend to be more relax and free. And be able to let other people see if you are online and are able to comment on your post. However, professional accounts like when the instructor is using to teach. People tend to think more before they post anything. What’s more, “Professional identity also develops through internet-based social interaction on the online platforms and communication tools(Jawed et al. 33) ” which is also different from personal social media use.

  • How do digital identities converge in networked publics? What are the impacts and/or benefits?

The public network is that everyone can connect. Digital identities will converge in the networked publics when you allow the information that shares on the internet that everyone can see. For the networked in the public, it is easy to find the personal information online and more likely can search for professional information as well. Everything that you posted online is connected. If people want to find any information for you, they are more likely to find something that you posted online. I remembered that I was posting to sell something online and put my phone number in networked publics. And when I was doing the projects with my classmates and I created a social media account my phone number is showing somehow. I guess this is how my digital identities converge in networked publics. And I give the permission to show my phone number online. The benefits are that people may get to know you before they even meet you in person since it might have much personal information on social media.

  • Can a digital wallet provide trust in networked publics?

A digital wallet is a software system that keeps our payment information and also password. It is very convenient for us to shop online. According to Davos’ video, it talks about that “over 60% of the global GDP expected to l be digitized in 2022. And more and more people, businesses, devices things interact online (Davos, 2019)” Digital wallet can be used together with the mobile online banking so that we are able to pay for any purchases with the smartphones. Moreover, there is an economic benefit for the digital identity. We can think of “all the time we can save, with the trusted, secured digital identity we can build many digital services to make our life much easier (Davos, 2019)” For example, I set up apple pay on my phone which is very convenient to pay things. I can simply tap and receive the electronic receipt.
